                              Peruvian Graduate Students Visit Texas State University

Peruvian Delegates Visit the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences

Mg. Orestes Boza Cachay, Dean of the College of Industrial Engineering at the Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) in Lima, Peru, and 17 Graduate students in Textile Management and Engineering were hosted by Dr. Jaime Chahin, Dean of the College of Applied Arts, on March 23-25.  The visit included tours and presentations by faculty in the Department of Family & Consumer Sciences, the Ingram School of Engineering, and the McCoy College of Business.  Dr. Gwendolyn Hustvedt served as special host for the visitors and arranged a seminar on “Doing Business in the US” for the guests with the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at City Hall in Austin.  Last May, Dr. Hustvedt spent 2 weeks in Peru touring textiles factories and teaching a graduate course on textile quality at UNMSM.  The UNMSM was established in 1500 and is the oldest university in the Americas.

 

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

Recent Conference Presentations:
  • Jennifer Carreon presented a paper titled "Establishing Organized Crime as a Threat to National Security" at the 2009 National Conference for the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in Boston, held March 10-14.
Upcoming Presentations:
  • Felix Adam III will present a paper titled "Katrina Refuges in Houston: A Consideration of Collective Efficacy" at the 2009 Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences Conference in Boston held on March 10-14.
  • Sarah Scott is currently working on her thesis. It focuses on absconders in Travis County. Her chair is Dr. Joycelyn Pollock; the committee members include Drs. Pete Blair and Pablo Martinez. 
Publications:
  • Sarah Scott was the second author on the study guide, instructor’s manual, and all supplemental materials for Dr. Joycelyn Pollock's textbook: Crime & Justice in America: An Introduction to Criminal Justice.
 
FAMILY CONSUMER SCIENCES
  • Jennifer Griffin will present a poster entitled “Dietary Vitamin A: Decreases Liver Metastases of Colon Cancer in Mice” at the Experimental Biology Conference in New Orleans in April of 2009.
